Salobreña was originally constructed around a huge rock, on the top of which sits an ancient Arab castle. Indeed even today Salobreña retains its appeal as a whitewashed town clinging to the sides of an imposing rocky outcrop, crowned by a magnificent medieval castle.
The quaint whitewashed houses together with the narrow, winding streets that run between them are known as the ‘Casco Antiguo’ or the Old Town.
Hidden among these streets are some of the town’s best local bars where you can have a relaxing drink and tapas while watching the world go by. Salobreña boasts a long stretch of beach, which, while popular in summer months is not overcrowded with tourists making it perfect for anyone wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle further down the coast.
One of the things that visitors can’t fail to miss is the abundance of fields growing sugar cane. Salobreña remains one of the largest producers of cane sugar in the area and until recently was home to one of the only sugar cane refineries in Europe. Several varieties of tropical fruit are also produced locally, including the famous ‘chirimoya’ or custard apple.
For eating out, Salobreña has a good selection of restaurants serving both Spanish and international cuisine. Along the beach-front you can find ‘chiringuitos’ that specialize in fish and seafood. Salobreña also caters to your shopping needs.
Although there are no large hypermarkets or shopping centres (unlike the nearby town of Motril), there are plenty of smaller shops and supermarkets where one can find what they are looking for.
