Co-operative housing would solve housing crisis

Brilliant article written by David Rodgers, Executive Director of CDS Co-operatives, the largest secondary housing co-operative in England, since 1979.

Highlights:

Mortgage lending is at its lowest ebb for decades as banks rebuild their liquidity and can no longer borrow the cheap money that flowed back to our Western economies from trading deficits with China and other developing Eastern economies: cheap money that created the sub-prime mortgage lending and toxic debt in the USA housing market and the housing market bubbles in the UK, Spain and Ireland that fuelled the global financial crisis of 2008.

Housing Crisis will get worse in United Kingdom 

UK .- "The National Housing Federation (NHF) has warned that a chronic under supply of homes is plunging the house market in to crisis. A study by the National Housing Federation (NHF) predicts that home ownership in England alone will fall from 67 per cent to 63.8 per cent over the next decade.

Oxford economics commissioned research recently that showed home ownership has been steadily falling for the last 10 years and this could decline further from its current rate. This forecast is based on assumptions that affordability will worsen as employment and wages fall and house prices rise over the next 5 year."

Changing housing policy benefits economy at a local level

The housing market predicts local economic conditions. There is a correlation between the percentage of underwater mortgages in a state (i.e., mortgages on which the homeowner owes more than his property is worth) and the unemployment rate.

“There’s no environmental review to conduct or long-delay in actually getting this into motion; underwater consumers who want to knock a few hundred dollars off their mortgages are well-incentivized to initiate, carry out and make sure this gets completed themselves. It outsources much of the bureaucratic requirements to those consumers who stand to benefit” - Mike Konczal.
