Spain against Scotland negotiating EU membership
Spanish acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has shown his clear opposition to Scotland’s ambition to remain part of the European Union despite the UK’s recent decision to leave.
“If the UK goes, Scotland goes,” said Rajoy, speaking in Brussels at a meeting to discuss the effects of Brexit.
While he did not mention Catalonia, the caretaker PM has the northeastern Spanish region clearly in mind, as Scottish membership in the EU would set an example for Catalan separatists.
Rajoy’s Popular Party (PP) and other Spanish mainstream parties opposed to Catalan independence have often used the argument that an independent Catalonia would be automatically kicked out of the EU club.
The Spanish leader, who won a repeat national election on Sunday and is hoping to secure enough support to get himself reinstated for four more years, said he is “radically opposed” to the idea of negotiating Britain’s exit with anyone other than the British government.

Banks are selling off repossessed homes with tenants inside
Around 36 percent of homes being sold by Catalan lenders to real estate firms and investment funds have a tenant inside, according to sources from the Catalonia regional 
government.
The properties in question have all been repossessed by banks from borrowers in default, who then cut a deal with the bank: by turning in the keys, the home reverted to the lender, the mortgage was canceled, and the homeowners became tenants instead.
But now, Catalan authorities fear that those families may end up being evicted by the new owners of the properties.
To stop this from happening, the regional government is considering purchasing a portfolio of homes in partnership with the municipalities where the 774 families affected by the problem have their main residence.

Catalonia to Tax Banks for Keeping Properties Empty
The Catalan government has approved a draft bill on taxing financial institutions in the region for leaving housing they own empty for more than two years.
The bill will be sent to the regional assembly for approval before the summer and will take effect from the start of next year. The levy will range from 850 to 1,650 euros a year per house and will affect 15,000 housing units in 70 municipalities in the region.
One of the first measures that the ruling center-right nationalist CiU group - led by regional premier Artur Mas - took on attaining power was to strike down a law introduced by the previous Socialist-led coalition that forced banks to rent empty homes. In the wake of a spate of home evictions, pressure groups demanded that Mas restore that law.
