Known as Villa Colani, inspired by the legendary designer Luigi Colani and located on the island of Majorca (Balearics, Spain), this estate was finished in 2009. There's about 10,700-square-feet of living space that includes a spherical kitchen for which the appliances (even the spherical ones) were designed by Sheer and flown in from Italy. More than 1,230 square feet of 24-carat gold (the gold weighed 60 pounds and at the time cost more than $1 million) was used in the swimming pools and house. There are golden fixtures and crystal chandeliers. Specialists and security experts from Austria, Germany and Switzerland were brought in for the installations. And, of course, there is a safe room.

Everything in the house runs by remote control -- appliances, curtains, the closed circuit TV, and security systems.

It's a home full of gadgets, glitter and gizmos. But of the highest quality and expense. The estate is a series of circular structures, connected by terraces, water features and wrapped in a package where the exterior is bright orange. There's an eclectic mix of statues, blue marble columns with gilded plinths, genuine gold mosaic in the bath, and a pool that abuts directly to the exterior of the house.

The exacting renovation of the villa was followed closely by the media in Majorca and Germany. And the crowning media moment came when Colani himself visited to witness the installation of the Colani entrance door. He apparently was pleased.

The 'Golden Visa' system now operating in Spain has prompted a 2,500 per cent increase in interest from Middle Eastern buyers in the year to date, compared with the same period in 2012.

The low property prices in Spain, which suffered from a glut of unsellable property during the credit crisis and high levels of repossessions, combined with the ability to secure EU residency has boosted tourism in recent months as potential buyers flock to the country to find their perfect property.

More than eight million people visited Spain in August alone, according to the Spanish tourism ministry, with Russians flocking in their thousands – between January and July this year, the number of Russian visitors rose by 30 per cent to 838,876.

Apartment in Barrio Gotico, Barcelona

Carrer Avinyó is a piano nobile apartment in the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona (Catalonia). The apartment is situated on the corner of a significant local crossroads. Like the Flatiron Building in New York, where Broadway cuts diagonally across the city grid, the apartment building has a distinctive triangular form that is echoed in the adjacent public space, Plaça George Orwell. A primary design move in the apartment’s refurbishment was to take advantage of this special situation by removing all of the interior cross walls to create one large corner room.

The apartment will be the holiday home of two brothers who grew up in Barcelona (Catalonia). The new mosaic floor of the apartment is decorated with a triangular pattern that matches the geometry of the plan. The tile pattern is graded in colour from green at one end of the apartment to red at the other to differentiate the brothers' private spaces. The encaustic tiles were manufactured by Mosaics Martí, suppliers of tiles to Antoni Gaudí.

Bedrooms were created inside large pieces of furniture that have the appearance of small buildings – the city beyond the apartment walls is mirrored by a diminutive city within. The high-level library becomes balconies that connect each bedroom to their en-suite bathrooms. A large, specially-designed dining table stands at the street corner where the red and green tiles mix as an invitation for gatherings of friends and family.

Carrer Avinyó is shortlisted for a World Architecture Festival 2013 Inside Award and UK Interior Architect of the Year 2013.

The worst effects of the global recession have seen property prices plummet, representing a golden opportunity to pick up relative bargains. For those unable to sell, it provides a significant headache.

In order to reverse the situation, tax officials have taken more proactive steps, resulting in an increase in reviews of sale prices and the transfer taxes paid when properties are bought. It’s a step that can have consequences for buyers a number of years after ownership of the homes in question has changed hands.

This price review is a valid long-standing tax measure under Spanish property law. However, it is not necessarily apparent or brought to the attention of those eager to start life overseas.

When recession struck, the amount of transfer tax – called impuesto de transmisiones patrimoniales (ITP) – pouring into official coffers decreased significantly owing to the reduced number of sales and/or lower prices.

Under the terms of the Spanish law Ley del Impuesto sobre Transmisiones Patrimoniales y Actos Jurídicos Documentados, enacted in 1993, regional tax authorities have powers to examine all property purchases in order to ensure that the correct amount of ITP is paid by the buyer.

This state-of-the-art building, design by Spanish practice Selgascano, is based on the marine traditions of the city. Its location next to the port and sea of Cartagena (Murcia) influence the design.

The exterior is dominated by straight lines, similar to the containers of the boats stacked in the docks, the straightness of the edge of the port and the calm of the surrounding sea.

The innovative materials used, native to the area have been used for the first time in the façade of a building, and have allowed us to create luminous areas which provide great brightness to the interior. The complex structure, characterised by the absence of pillars, creates an interior with large open areas and bright effect, reminiscent of the weightlessness of the deep sea.

The interior is a bright, translucent and delicate space which is connected by a walkway of gentle ramps which take us around the whole building. The grandeur and luminosity of the interiors make El Batel Auditorium and Conference Centre an airy building which transmits the harmony and serenity of a calm sea.

The surroundings of the building, decorated with spruce boards and varied vegetation, comprises a leisure area which allows us to enjoy the seafront promenade.

Five years after Spain's property bubble burst, hundreds of thousands of new and unfinished properties remain unsold throughout the country. Meanwhile, some of the biggest companies in the world have had to eat humble pie, reduce their size, and in some cases have simply been swept away.

This is the case for the major financial institutions, as well as Sareb - the so-called "bad bank" set up to sell the vast portfolio of real estate accumulated by failed, and subsequently nationalized, banks after the property companies they had financed went belly up.

Estimates of the number of unsold houses range between the government's figure of 675,000 and the 815,000 calculated by savings bank CatalunyaCaixa. To this figure also needs to be added the close to half-a-million homes that are still under construction, according to both the government and the real estate sector. The areas with the largest number of unsold properties are, in order: Castellón, where one in four homes is empty according to CatalunyaCaixa; Toledo; Murcia; Almería; Tarragona; La Rioja; Alicante and Malaga.
